Reading Assignments, Exams, and Papers

For our September 17 class session, please read Units V, VI, and VII of Dragons. These chapters offer advice on how to approach college reading assignments, exams, and papers. If you were Polonius and trying to give advice to a son or daughter headed off to college, what bit of advice from these chapters would you be most likely to include? Why? [Remember: Polonius' advice usually sounds good, but it isn't necessarily all that helpful....though it might be!]

  1. The advice I’d give to my son or daughter going off to college, would be to A.) Ask questions, B.) Review, and C.) Take proper precautions in essays and papers. Asking questions not only furthers your information, but also allows the professor to know what is being confused in class.
Reviewing, or studying is important in order to recite the proper information on tests, papers, and even participation in class. Taking the time to learn to write papers and essays, to edit essays, and have you be able to pure edit people’s papers is important too. Not every test is going to be a fill in the blank or just fill in a bubble. Essays and papers are the main source in order to get students to express their ideas from what they were taught.

  2. The Polonius advice I would give to my children would be meet your professors one on one if you can. I would say take good notes. Anything the professor says twice or write on the board is really important. Ask questions if you do not get something. Learn to write proper papers and essay.
Skim read in books. Write a paper with common format and also listen to what kind of format the teacher wants. Know what type of test the professor is giving you. Study the certain way of the test. Take more time studying for the essay tests. Thank you for this information it will be helpful for me.

  4. The advice I would give to my children would be to learn proper ways of taking notes earlier rather than later. Take advantage of what professors say multiple times and what they write on the board. Also, to ask questions in class or go meet with your professors. This should show them that you care and you can get to know them better. I would also tell them to advantage of the SI.

  5. The advice I would give my children as they go off to college would be to learn how to write a proper essay. I would tell them to take good notes and to study them not just before an exam but also in the weeks leading up to the exam. I would tell them to do the reading because it will help them understand the material better. Use the PSQ5R method if you aren't getting anything out of the reading. Ask the professor what to expect on the exams and ask for tips on how to study for the exams.
